RYA International Certificate of Competence (Power)

RYA Certificates

Bisham Abbey Sailing and Navigation School is an RYA appointed test centre for the International Certificate of Competence (I.C.C.). The ICC is required by some European countries for certain categories of pleasure craft for both coastal and inland waterways use.

In some countries compulsory certificates are required of nationals simply because officials expect to see such a certificate.

The test is available for either coastal or inland waters. We are able to offer both tests at Bisham Abbey Sailing and Navigation School. I.C.C. application forms are available either directly from the RYA or we can send you a copy. Whilst some training will be given during the day of the test some previous boat handling experience and knowledge of regulations, (pilotage and navigation - for coastal ICC), (CEVNI* regulations - for inland ICC) are required.

*CEVNI = Code Européen des Voies de la Navigation Intérieure.

If you are confident that your knowledge and skills are to the required standard, the test should present few problems. Some training on both practical and theoretical skills will be given during the test to help raise you to the required standard.   For inland candidates the European Waterways Regulation booklet can be ordered from us and sent to you prior to your course. The ICC form should be completed on the day of the test.

If your knowledge and skills are minimal further time and training will be required, indeed for the coastal qualification we would recommend first taking the RYA Dayskipper shore-based course available at our Centre.

There are two categories of International Certificate of Competence (power) relating to length of craft:
1.     Powered craft up to 10 metres (assessment to be taken on a craft up to 10m in length)
2.     Powered craft up to 24 metres (assessment to be taken on a craft over 10m & up to 24m in length)

Coastal I.C.C.s must be taken on a sea-going vessel.
Inland   I.C.C.s may be taken on any motor vessel with the addition of a written CEVNI test.

We have craft that meet the requirements of all the above categories, we reserve the right to fill the course with up to three candidates on our boats:-

Our RIB:  a 4. 4metre rigid inflatable sports-boat (40hp outboard). ICC Coastal and Inland for up to 10m can be issued for courses taken on this craft, available mid week by mutual arrangement.   Fee £200 per person per day ( inc. Your own boat : ICC is dependant on the length and suitability of your craft.   Fee £200 per person per day ( inc. VAT @ 17.5%), to a maximum of three people plus the additional RYA International Certificate of Competence application fee (currently free to RYA members)

Check which boat will suit your requirements best; if it is our RIB, the Mitchell 22 or our narrowboat, please establish a couple of suitable dates, midweek,  to choose between for your ICC and telephone us on 01628 474960 to check availability.

If our 17m Dutch Barge suits your requirement best we do have designated dates scheduled, midweek, please telephone 01628 474960 to find the next available date.

When we have confirmed a mutually agreeable date you can forward the completed booking application form together with your cheque to secure your place. The additional fee, payable separately to the Royal Yachting Association; needs to be sent together with your ICC application form - after the test has been completed.   If you are already a member of the Royal Yachting Association that part is free.

Please note the International Certificate of Competence is only available to British citizens or bone fide British residents.  Please bring your passport along on the day of the test.

You will also need to bring a packed lunch, waterproof clothing and suitable soft-soled shoes.   The course timings are 0930hrs start and finish approximately 1600hrs.
