Aimed at the professional helmsman but useful for all owners and operators of water-borne craft, this course is a Marine Coastguard Agency approved Boatmaster Licence ancillary course, qualifying the holder for all waters (cat. A,B,C,D). Candidates can also take two other Boatmaster Licence underpinning courses at our Centre, namely the RYA Sea Survival Water Safety course and the RYA First Aid course. All three courses are of one days duration each. Course numbers are small and all these courses include an element of practical work.

| Knowledge of types and sources of ignition likely to be found on vessels |
| Awareness of flammable materials, fire hazards and spread of fire |
| Knowledge of best practice precautions and awareness of need for vigilance |
| Knowledge of classification of fires (A, B, C & D) and correct extinguishing equipment and methods for each type |
| Knowledge of types of extinguishers: water, dry powder, foam, CO2, fire blanket, etc. |
| Know how to extinguish a fire (and demonstrate practical use of extinguishers) |
| Knowledge of correct location of fire fighting equipment on vessel |
| Awareness of types and use of fixed fire-fighting installations on large vessels |
| Knowledge of correct sequence for fire detection and raising the alarm (FIRE): Find, Inform, Restrict, Extinguish |
